8 Ideas for a New Home Gift
Posted by Dan O'Malley in Home Design
Are you getting bored with your current home décor? Do you watch your favorite home improvement shows and wish your home looked a little more modern? Would you like to sell your home, but don’t feel like its interior décor fits the bill of today’s buyer?
These are all questions you might be asking yourself if you feel stuck with your current home design or setup. Aundrea Brown, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Intermark Design Group, shared some great insights on when it is time to change things up.
According to Aundrea, it is officially time to update your home if:
- You have gold or beige tones in your tile flooring
- You do not currently have a mix of metals
- You have fringe or swag drapery
- You have a Ficus tree
- You have small or under-scale pendant lights
- You have rope or molding on your cabinets
Read on to see if it’s time to update your home's design and get some ideas for easy home renovations or quick weekend home improvement projects!
1. You Have Golden or Beige Tones in Your Tile Flooring
Tile with golden or beige undertones will give your floors a more dated look. To give your floors a modern makeover, try a larger tile with gray undertones. The 12” x 24” tiles are a good constant to have in your home, but deciding to go with larger tiles like 24” x 24” will provide a more timeless look in the space.
2. You Do Not Currently Have a Mix of Metals
Gone are the days of having strictly chrome or bronze fixtures and hardware. Mix it up! Throw in some matte black, champagne, or gold—like gold hardware.
3. You Have Fringe or Swag Drapery
It’s time to clean it up. Freshen up your windows to let in more natural light and brighten up your home! Take off those early 1800s curtain styles. It’s actually better to have no window treatment than outdated window treatment.
However, if you enjoy the look of curtains or want to be able to block the sunlight every once in a while, head to your local retailer for some simple, vertical panels.
4. You Have a Ficus Tree
The late 90s and early 2000s called and they want their house plant back.
“It’s time to throw it out. From a design perspective, we are seeing more cacti and other succulents coming into trend,” says Aundrea.
Plants look great in your home and add life into spaces! Cacti and other succulents aren’t the only greenery coming into higher popularity.
You can also choose on-trend house plants with bigger leaves, like the Monstera Deliciosa—bonus points for this one, as it is fairly easy to take care of once you get started with it!
5. You Have Small or Under-Scale Pendant Lights
In current home design, the bigger the light fixture, the bigger statement it makes. When you have an oversized light fixture as your focal point in a room, you won’t feel the need to crowd the space with other accessories and decorations.
This applies to dining rooms, bedrooms, larger living spaces, and more. Keep your spaces sleek and simple by making a bold choice with your light fixture.
6. You Have Rope or Molding on Your Cabinets
Rope and molding on your cabinets may be associated with a classic feel, but it is time to remodel and get with the current times.
The modern homebuyer is looking for clean lines in the kitchen or bathroom! Flat panel cabinets or shaker-style cabinets are the way to go.
Take a look around your home. Any bad drapes or Ficus trees? If so, it might be time to make some design or decoration changes.
